Dr. Andrea Zifarelli has performed research in fields related to the scientific sector 02/B1 Experimental Physics of Matter and 02/D1 Applied physics, in particular to the study and development of optical-based sensors devoted to the analysis of complex gas mixtures exploiting laser absorption spectroscopy. His research activities have been mainly devoted to the study of optical sensors for gas detection of complex gas mixtures exploiting quartz tuning forks (QTF) as sensing elements. Dr. Zifarelli developed several gas sensors based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), employing innovative and non-commercial laser sources for multi-gas detection. In this field, his research was focused on multivariate analysis tool for spectral interpretation. Moreover, his research activities were devoted to the investigation of QTF as infrared photodetector for Light-Induced Thermo-Elastic Spectroscopy (LITES), and he contributed to seminal works in this field. Currently, he is Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Physics Department of the University of Bari carrying on his research activities within the PolySense laboratory, joint-research laboratory between Physics Department and Thorlabs GmbH.

Dr. Zifarelli is a reviewer for several international journals, such as: Scientific Reports, Photoacoustics, Sensors & Actuators: B Chemical, Sensors, Molecules etc. Dr. Zifarelli is author or co-author of 21 publications edited on peer-reviewed international journals, 1 book chapter and 19 conference proceedings. Dr. Zifarelli has a Hirsch factor of 12, related to 41 documents and 533 citations (SCOPUS).
