Spagnolo Vincenzo was born in Manfredonia (FG), Italy in 1967. He received the degree (summa cum laude) and the PhD, both in physics, from University of Bari. He works as Full Professor of Applied Physics at the Technical University of Bari. In 2019, he become Vice-Rector of the Technical University of Bari, deputy to Technology Transfer. The main scientific activity of Vincenzo Spagnolo has been related to electron-phonon interaction in low dimensional system, micro-probe optical characterization of semiconductor laser devices, thermal modeling of optoelectronic devices and more recently on the development of optoacoustic gas sensors based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy. He has been visiting researcher at Rice University (Texas) in 2009 and 2010 and visiting professor in 2017. He is “hundred talents” visiting professor at Shanxi University in Taiyuan (China). Since 2017, he is the director of the joint-research lab PolySense, created by THORLABS GmbH and Technical University of Bari, devoted to the development and implementation of novel gas sensing techniques and the realization of highly sensitive QEPAS trace-gas sensors. Since 2023, Prof. Spagnolo is co-director of the International Joint Laboratory on Laser Carbon Monitoring at Shanxi University. Prof. Spagnolo co-founded in 2021 “PolySenSe Innovations”, a spinoff company devoted to commercialization of innovative gas sensors and consulting for applications in environmental, petrochemical, and biomedical fields. His research activity is documented by more than 290 Scopus publications and 6 filed patents (more than 7200 citations, h-index 51). He has given more than 60 invited, keynote and plenary presentations at international conferences and workshops. Prof. Spagnolo is responsible for the Technical University of Bari or University of Bari research unit in several National and European Projects. He serves in EU-COST, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Austrian Science Fund, Dutch Research Council (NWO), Italian minister of Research and Italian Minister of Defence as reviewer of photonics and sensing related projects. Prof. Spagnolo is program committee member of several SPIE and OSA conferences. He is editor of Sensors (MPDI), Applied Science (MPDI) and guest Editor of Photoacoustics (Elsevier) and Frontiers in Environmental Chemistry. Prof. Spagnolo is Fellow member of the SPIE and senior member of the OSA. He has been granted with the “Terra del Sole” prize and the “Re Manfredi” award in 2018, and the “Argos Hyppium” price in 2019. He recieved the “Session Chair award” from PhotonIcs and Electromagnetics Research Symposium (PIERS) society in 2023. Prof. Spagnolo since 2019 has been ranked among Top 2% Scientists in the world by Stanford University, USA (https://elsevier.digitalcommonsdata.com/datasets/btchxktzyw/6). In 2023, he has been listed in the world top scientists list for Engineering and Technology discipline https://research.com/u/vincenzo-spagnolo. In 2024 ha has been listed in the World Scientists Rankings 2024 by AD Scientific Index (Vincenzo Spagnolo – AD Scientific Index 2024).
